Parkview Ikoyi residents complain of stench from collapsed 21-storey building site

Some residents of the high-brow Parkview Ikoyi, Lagos, are beginning to complain of foully odour oozing out from the site of the 21-storey building that collapsed on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, 11 days ago.

The site of the collapsed building, even though has its access from Gerrard Road, is recessed within the precincts of Parkview Estate.

This comes as the Lagos State Government announced that two more bodies have been recovered, bringing to 45 the number of bodies so far retrieved from the rubbles of the collapsed building.

Those particularly affected by the putrid smell are residents whose houses are in close proximity or directly bordering the perimeter fencing of the tragic site.

One, out of the residents who spoke to RELIABLESOURCENG.COM, said the occasional whiff of unwholesome air around his area might be an indication that more bodies may be lying underneath the hardcore rubbles.

“Not until the rescue workers get to ground zero would we know,” he said cautiously.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said in a statement on Wednesday, that the two more bodies were recovered Wednesday and that recovery operation at the site had continued.

According to him, the identification of bodies of the victims of the incident has continued at the IDH, Yaba, Lagos Mainland.

“So far, 32 families have come forward to submit samples for DNA to identify bodies that they wish to claim. In cases where identification is clear and there are no arguments, the bodies will be released to the families.

“A committee to supervise the identification and release of the bodies has begun work. It comprises senior officials of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Justice,” he said.

Omotoso said that contrary to speculations, no directive had been given for the demolition of the two high-rise buildings standing at the site of the 21-storey collapsed building.

He said that the Panel of Inquiry instituted to establish issues surrounding the collapse of the building had continued to sit and an integrity test was yet to be conducted on the buildings.

The commissioner said that it was, therefore, wrong to assert or speculate that the buildings would be demolished.
