Nine passengers dead as truck falls on commercial bus in Lagos

Nine persons including two children were killed Sunday afternoon after a container loaded on an articulated vehicle fell off and landed on a commercial bus in Lagos.

It was gathered that the commercial bus was loading passengers under the bridge at Ojuelegba area of Lagos when the truck carrying a 20-foot container suddenly fell on it.

Witnesses claimed that the bus was loaded to capacity, adding that an unspecified number of passengers sustained varying injuries.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said those killed included four men, three women and two children.

He said a woman was rescued alive, adding that preliminary investigation revealed that the truck lost control and fell on the side of the bridge.

“After suspending the container load with the aid of the Agency’s forklift and cutting off the top of the bus with light rescue equipment, a single adult woman was extricated alive and taken to the trauma centre.

“Final casualty count is nine fatalities comprising four adult males, three adult females, a boy child and a girl child,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
