Five persons dead in gas explosion at Ladipo Market, Mushin

 

At least five persons have been confirmed dead in a ghastly gas explosion at the popular Ladipo auto spare market area of Mushin, Lagos State, on Tuesday.

Several others sustained injuries in the incident, which occurred between 8- 9am.

Ibrahim Farinloye, Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said the explosion occurred at a domestic gas (LPG) retailing shop at Ojekunle Street.

“So far, four adults comprising of three, males and one female (mama Funmi) were recovered dead while the only infant rescued died before getting to hospital.

“The fire has been put out already and recovery of bodies ongoing.

“State Fire Service, Police Disaster Management Unit, NEMA and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) are on rescue operations. Emergency Alert!” he said.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service also announced that it was attending to the situation.

In a statement, the agency said on arrival at the scene, it was discovered that an open space used for several activities, including a beer parlour, mechanic workshop, spare parts sale, and gas shop was affected.

Mrs Margaret Adeseye, Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, said the place had been cordoned off to prevent any secondary incident.

She said investigation to establish the cause of the incident was ongoing and further findings will be made public.
