As the world celebrates the appointment of Nigeria’s former finance minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as the new Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), a former senator, Shehu Sani, has warned of the danger in expecting too much from her.

Sani, a member of the eighth National Assembly where he represented Kaduna Central, in his congratulatory message to Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, cautioned Nigerians and indeed the government not to over burden the first woman WTO DG with expectations.

According to Senator Sani, the economic transformation of Nigeria depends on what we do as a people to achieve desired goals and not necessarily by having a Nigerian occupy such globally acknowledged office of WTO DG.

In the goodwill message published on his Twitter handle Monday, Sani tweeted: “Congratulations to Dr Okonjo Iweala for the @wto job.

“Please read the duties and mandate of the organization before you burden her with too much expectations.

“The economic transformation of our country much depends on what we do within our country to achieve the desired goals.”

The WTO Monday ratified Dr Okonjo-Iweala as the first woman and the first African to lead the 26-year-old world trade body, at a special meeting of the General Council, in Geneva, Switzerland.
