VIDEO: Railway staff fight train fire with leaves

A video trending online has shown staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) attacking a burning coach with leafy sticks cut from tree branches.

Having exhausted few cans of fire extinguishers, seen lying on the ground in the video, the beleaguered railway workers resorted to grass, leaves and other things they could lay their hands to quench the raging fire.

“The extinguisher don finish,” said a voice in pidgin English, meaning, the fire extinguisher is exhausted.

Another voice was heard telling his colleagues not to bother anymore as the fire was only burning a rubber part of the coach.

RELIABLESOURCENG.COM gathered that the passenger train was travelling along the just inaugurated Warri-Itakpe standard gauge rail line, around Delta State, on Tuesday evening.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Public Relations Officer of the corporation, Mahmood Yakub, told the media that an investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the fire.

“Our managing director will be addressing the media on the cause of the fire before the close of Wednesday (today), but the investigation is ongoing to know what caused the fire on one of the Warri-Itakpe coaches,” Yakub said.

Thankfully, the fire did not cause any physical hurt to passengers aboard the train as it was mostly an adjoining rubber between coaches that was gutted.
