President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate postponement of the 2020 National Sports Festival, billed to start in five days, in Edo State, to a future date.

The shift is said to be a precautionary move against #COVID19.

The President was Wednesday morning briefed by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare and the Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnibe Mamora.

Nigeria’s Sports Minister Sunday Dare announced the postponement of the biggest sports festival in Africa, expected to accommodate over 10,000 participants in Benin, the capital city of Edo state.

“This is easily the first major casualty of sports in Nigeria, provoked by the coronavirus,” Mitchell Obi, AIPS Africa president, told RELIABLESOURCENG.COM regrettably.

He added unenthusiastically, but prophetically: “Expected to be postponed now from the cue of the President is the professional football league which is still fully on.”
