Protesters in their thousands marched through the streets of Owerri, Imo State capital on Sunday, protesting the sacking of Hon Emeka Ihedioha as Governor, by the Supreme Court.

Former Governor Ihedioha of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was last Tuesday removed by the Supreme Court while Senator Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner of the 2019 governorship election in the state.

The Supreme Court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Ihedioha and issue a new Certificate of Return to Uzodinma.

The apex court also ordered that Uzodinma be sworn in immediately.

INEC on Wednesday issued a certificate of return to Uzodinma who was subsequently sworn in by the state Chief Judge. Uzodinma had already started work as the governor.

However, youths and the elderly marched through the streets of Owerri carrying placards with diverse inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs.

The national secretariat of the PDP had also threatened to embark on a protest in Abuja on Monday following the Supreme Court ruling which it has already described as a travesty of justice.
