Six dead bodies pulled out of collapsed seven-storey building in Oniru, Lagos
Rescue and emergency services workers carrying out remains of victims of the collapsed building in Oniru. The seven-storey structure under construction came down on Sunday, September 4, 2022.

Four more bodies have been retrieved on Monday from the rubbles of the seven-storey building which collapsed on Sunday in Oniru area of Victoria Island, Lagos State.

This brings the total number of dead in the early Sunday morning tragic incident to six.

Emergency officials had on Sunday pulled out two corpses from the collapsed building, which was under construction as at the time it came down.

RELIABLESOURCENG.COM reports that the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, on Monday resigned his appointment, evidently due to the embarrassing development and series of others in different parts of the state, before it.

There is no official statement yet on what led to the collapse of the building, situated at Oba Idowu, Oniru Street, very close to the palace of the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed Monday retrieval of additional four bodies from the collapse site.

In a statement, Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency had been working closely with first responders and other officials within the past 24 hours.

“The Agency, alongside other first responders, has been working for over 24 hours at the above 7-storey building which collapsed yesterday,” he said while giving update on the emergency service.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government had ordered the arrest of the developer and other building professionals working on the collapsed building.

The order came from the now resigned Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Salako, when he visited the site on Sunday.

Salako said the developer and other professionals working on the structure violated the state’s planning laws.

“There must be a valid Planning Permit from the aforementioned agency, in addition to a letter of Authorisation, Stage inspection at every milestone and certification by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), to ensure that construction works were carried out in conformity with the approval granted,” he said.

He added that the Police were on the trail of the developer and all others involved in the project such as architects, builders, and engineers.
