Ohaneze Ndigbo Election: Igbos take town hall meeting to Zoom

The Coalition of Igbo Organisations Worldwide is holding a unified town hall meeting that will offer the Igbo at home and in diaspora the opportunity to meet the aspirants jostling to replace the current Ohaneze President, Chief Nnia Nwodo.
Nwodo’s tenure expires in January 2021.
A statement jointly signed by Barr Austin Okeke and Mr Gideon Adikwuru, representatives of the Coalition, says the meeting will hold virtually on Zoom, Sunday, 13th December 2020, at 4pm (Nigerian time).
The town hall meeting-cum-interactive session comes ahead of the Ohaneze Ndigbo general election in January 2021.
Aspirants slated for the session are, Prof Chidi Osuagwu, Dr Joe Nwaorgu, Dr Chris Asoluka, Chief Goddy Uwazurike and Prof George Obiozor.
The statement noted that in January delegates across the seven Igbo speaking states of Nigeria namely, Abia, Anambra, Anioma in Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo and Ikwerre in Rivers will “democratically” elect new leaders for the apex Igbo Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

According to the coordinators, the challenges occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic necessitated the use of the virtual platform to hold the session for Igbos across the world.
“Zoom provides us an alternative to reach out to Igbos across the globe. With the online meeting, Ndigbo in the diaspora and in Nigeria will be able to connect to hear directly from these aspirants.
“The Igbo Nation has its principles built on democratic Republicanism; therefore, making it one of the oldest democracies in the world.
“The virtual meeting traverses the borders of Nigeria such that Igbos in China, UK, America, Ghana, South Africa or even Alaba Market can watch in real time,” the statement explained.
It added: “The aspirants are astute men who have succeeded across several fields from academia to business.
“The last general election for President General, which saw Chief Nnia Nwodo emerge as the President General was held in 2017. This election scheduled for January 2021 would see the election of a new President General who would serve the Igbo race for one four-year term.”
