The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has placed police commands and formations nationwide on red alert.

A statement issued Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, described the action as a proactive measure, following intelligence report that some “domestic interests” are planning to embark on massive public disturbances to protest the killing of an Iranian army general by the United States government.

“Consequently, Zonal AIGs and Command Commissioners of Police have been directed to ensure maximum surveillance and security of lives and property across the nation.

“The Police Commanders have been directed to ensure strategic deployments of both overt and covert Police operatives to ensure adequate security and safety of citizens, foreigners especially diplomats and diplomatic missions domiciled in Nigeria, as well as the protection of critical national assets,” the statement stated.

The IGP, according to the statement, assured Nigerians and foreigner nationals in the country of adequate security and warned “all potential troublemakers to steer clear of the streets and territory of Nigeria.”

It would be recalled that the US President, Donald Trump, had ordered the killing of the Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani was killed last Friday in Baghdad through a drone strike.
