NCDC confirms 339 new cases, says hand-washing critical to avert COVID-19

Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says regular hand-washing remains the surest way of reducing the risk of contacting the deadly coronavirus infection.

The Director General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, made the assertion just as the infectious diseases managing agency announced that 339 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded across Nigeria on Thursday, May 21 2020.

NCDC also said nine deaths were registered same day.

According to the NCDC, Nigeria till date has a total of 7,016 confirmed cases, 1,907 cases have been discharged and 211 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The 339 new cases were reported as follows: Lagos (139), Kano (28), Oyo (28), Edo (25), Katsina (22), Kaduna (18), Jigawa (14), Yobe (13), Plateau (13), FCT (11), Gombe (8), Ogun (5), Bauchi (4), Nasarawa (4), Delta (3), Ondo (2), Rivers (1), Adamawa (1).

Said Ihekweazu: “Regular handwashing is very important to reduce the risk of spread of #COVID19. An important moment to wash your hands is after handling money, especially if you are handling or eating food.”

He added that a high number of coronavirus patients show little or no symptoms and do not need to be isolated but for the wellbeing of people around them.

According to Ihekweazu @Chikwe_I who spoke at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 #PTFCOVID19, “80% of #COVID19 cases show mild or no symptoms at all. These cases won’t be in isolation facilities under normal circumstances. Asymptomatic patients are primarily isolated to prevent transmission of the virus especially to their loved ones.”
