Massive traffic as #EndSARS protesters take over Lekki toll gate

BY NICHOLAS ABE
Vehicular traffic on the Lekki, Ikoyi and Victoria Island axis of Lagos State was at its chaotic worse Monday morning, following the takeover of the Lekki toll plaza, Admiralty Circle, by the #EndSARS protesters.
This is despite the announced disbandment of the notorious police Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, at the weekend.
The protesters are still kicking against the redeployment of men of the defunct SARS into the mainstream police force, insisting that they should be completely banished from the force.
They are also asking that the president, Muhammadu Buhari, should address the nation on their grievances, which include the extra judicial killings and massive abuse of the fundamental human rights of Nigerian youths, who have mostly suffered from the rot and corruption in the disbanded squad.
They insist that justice must be done to the souls of all the young people who have lost their lives in the hands of SARS, similar special squads and the mother police force.

“They openly told the world that Nigerian youths are lazy. Therefore they sent miscreants and unreasonable people called SARS to kill our youths but we will show them how angry a lazy youth can be when messed with. Naija youths don’t be tired #SARSMUSTEND at lekki toll gate,” tweeted one of the protesters.
“I’m so proud of Nigerian Youths! Lekki Toll Gate is currently blocked. Soldiers were asked to turn back! There’s no better time to listen to the people’s demand than now! #EndSARS #SARSMUSTEND,” tweeted another protestant.
Yet another tweeted: “The momentum keeps building at Lekki toll gate as more and more people join the #SARSMustEnd movement. What exactly are we demanding? #EndSARS in real life & #EndPoliceBrutality. Join them if you are nearby! #EnoughIsEnough.
As early as 4am, the crowd had started building up at the Lekki toll gate, while Twitter handles were buzzing with calls asking people to head out and join the protest.
