I have Obasanjo’s legacy to continue – Atiku

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, says former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, does not have a better candidate to support in the 2023 presidential election than himself.

Atiku, who was Nigeria’s former Vice President under Obasanjo, between 1999-2007, said he assumed that he already has the support of the former president.

The PDP standard bearer who is taking a shot at the presidency for the sixth time spoke in an exclusive interview with ARISE News on Friday.

“I have been talking to him. The only thing is that after I emerged as PDP candidate, I didn’t go to him,” Atiku responded to a question on whether he had been talking to Obasanjo about his ambition and if he had Obasanjo’s support.

He continued: “Why won’t I need his support; he was my former boss? Of course, I will need his support. I assume I have it.

“I don’t think he has a better person (candidate) to support than myself because I have his legacy to continue.”

RELIABLESOURCENG.COM, however, reports that Atiku’s assumption of having the backing of Obasanjo may be presumptuous.

The former president had recently made a scathing remark about his former deputy, describing the decision to choose him (Atiku) as his running mate in the 1999 election as one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

Also, the former military Head of State and two-term civilian president is known to be sympathetic to the presidential candidature of the Labour Party candidate, Mr Peter Obi.

He recently hosted Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, in his house in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
