As the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Nigeria continue to increase, the federal government has called on states to take more responsibility to mitigate the spread of the virus across the nation.

National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 #PTFCOVID19, Dr Sani Aliyu, gave the charge Tuesday during the daily briefing of the PTF in Abuja.

Aliyu’s call came as the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced that 226 new cases of coronavirus and one death therefrom had been recorded in the country, on Tuesday.

The 226 new cases were reported from 15 states and the FCT. Lagos State led the pack with 131 cases, Ogun (25), Plateau (15), Edo (11), Kaduna (7), Oyo (6), FCT (5), Adamawa (5), Jigawa (4), Ebonyi (4), Borno (4), Nasarawa (3), Bauchi (2), Gombe (2), Enugu (1), Bayelsa (1).

Till date, 6,401 cases have been confirmed, 1,734 cases have been discharged and 192 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Cross River and Kogi states are yet to record any case of the virus.

Aliyu @DrSaniAliyu said that federal government’s responsibility in the battle against the global pandemic was to provide guidance and ensure adequate compliance while the states should be the primary drivers of the response.

“The response to #COVID19 cannot primarily be driven at the Federal level, we need states to take more ownership. Our responsibility is to provide guidance and ensure adequate compliance to recommended measures across board,” he declared at the briefing.
