Three persons were injured in a gas explosion that occurred at Four Points By Sheraton Hotel, on the high-brow Oniru area of Victoria Island, Lagos State on Wednesday.
The explosion also affected parts of the hotel building and damaged several cars parked within and around the hotel premises
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said a gas cylinder used by welders working within the hotel premises caused the explosion and not a bomb as had been initially thought and transmitted on various social media platforms.
LASEMA in a statement said, “On getting to the scene of the incident, a gas cylinder was said to have exploded within the vicinity of the hotel.
“Further investigations revealed that the gas cylinder used by welders working in the hotel premises exploded due to a leakage of one of the gas cylinder hose.”

According to LASEMA, a total of three persons were severe injured as a result of the blast. Two of the injured were rushed to Lagos Island General hospital, for intensive care while the third was taken to a nearby private hospital.
“Several cars and hotel room windows were shattered as a result of flying objects due to the blast,” LASEMA said in its statement.
A combined effort of the LASEMA Response Unit, Nigeria Police and staff of the hotel helped in evacuating the injured and maintaining security, in the aftermath of the explosion.
