Hours after Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of Kaduna State signed into law the Penal Code (Amendment) Law 2020, over 17,000 Nigerians flooded the online public complaint platform change.org to sign a petition, calling on the UK and European Union governments to place a travel ban on him.

“Under the amended law, the punishment for the rape of a person older than 14 years will include surgical castration or removal of fallopian tubes, but the death penalty shall not apply. In cases where the rape convict is also a child, the court shall order an appropriate punishment under the Children and Young Persons Law Cap 26, Laws of Kaduna State 1991,” a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, explained about the new law which came into effect 11 September, 2020.

However, while some female folks and anti-rape groups may be celebrating this current drastic measure put forward by Kaduna State Government, to check incessant cases of rape in the country, a former presidential aide Reno Omokiri, had taken El-Rufai to the court of public opinion on issues bordering on the governor’s alleged misdeeds.

Omokiri had started a petition on change.org, calling on the governments of the United Kingdom and the European Union to place a travel ban on El-Rufai, for allegedly “promoting genocide and religious and political intolerance”.

Omokiri, who was an aide to former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, reeled out a long list of allegations against El-Rufai, to buttress his position that the Kaduna governor was a threat to the peace and security of Nigeria and must be banned from visiting the UK and Europe.

“It is for this reason that Nigerian citizens call on the government of the United Kingdom and the European Union Presidency to follow the lead of the United States and place a visa ban on Nasir El-Rufai, who is scheming to become Nigeria’s President, to prevent a Rwandan style genocide in Nigeria,” Omokiri said in his petition.
