President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the appointment of Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as the acting President of the Court of Appeal (PCA) for a further period of three months, with effect from June 3, 2020.

The president’s approval for the extension was announced in a statement issued today, May 29, by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

Shehu said the president’s action was pursuant to Section 238(4) and (5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Justice Dongban-Mensem was first appointed acting President of the Court of Appeal for an initial period of three months, starting March 6, 2020, following the retirement of Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa who attained the mandatory retirement age of 70, same day.

The appointment of Dongban-Mensem, who hails from Plateau State, according to a statement by Shehu, in March, was based on the recommendation of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad.

She will act in that capacity until a substantive appointment into the position is made by president Buhari, subject to Senate confirmation, Shehu had said in his previous statement.
