Nigeria’s former two-time Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been elected the Director General of World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Okonjo-Iweala was said to have defeated the South Korean Minister of Trade Yoo Myung-hee by a wide margin to emerge the DG.

Her election will be formally announced by WTO later in the day, according to a source that spoke to Arise News, Wednesday afternoon.

Okonjo-Iweala’s victory is historic in the sense that she becomes the first woman director general of the 25-year-old 164-nation organisation.

The World Trade Organization is an intergovernmental organization that is concerned with the regulation of international trade between and among nations.
