British Prime Minister Theresa May has said she will quit as Conservative leader on 7 June, paving the way for a contest to decide a new prime minister.

May’s exit will end her months-long struggle to keep her job despite seething anger from her own Conservative party over her handling of Brexit.

“I believe it was right to persevere even when the odds against success seemed high. But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort,” May said in an emotional statement outside 10 Downing Street, this morning.

Mrs. May said she had “done my best” to honour the 2016 EU referendum result and that it would remain a matter of “deep regret” that she had been unable to deliver Brexit.
