Appeal Court disqualifies Akpabio as APC senatorial candidate
Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio

The senatorial ambition of former Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio, hangs in the balance as the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja has disqualified him from contesting the Akwa-Ibom North/West Senatorial District as a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the 2023 general elections.

The judgment was made on Monday evening in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

A Federal High Court had ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, as an APC senatorial candidate.

Justice Emeka Nwite had held that INEC acted illegally by refusing to accept and publish Akpabio’s name after it was sent by APC.
