Amnesty International queries Buhari on report of human rights abuse by military

BY NICHOLAS ABE
Amnesty International Nigeria has described as “gross display of contempt” the inability of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to release the report of a Presidential Panel that investigated allegations of human rights abuse by the armed forces, three years after the report was submitted to it.
In a flurry of tweets on Friday, the Nigerian chapter of the global defender of people’s rights queried: “It is now three years since you received report of the panel you set up to purportedly investigate allegations of human rights violations against Nigerian security forces. Victims came forward expecting justice. When are you going to release the report?”
According to Amnesty Nigeria, failure by the government to disclose the report of the panel, which it described as an important first step towards justice, “is a shameful betrayal of these victims” and an indication of lack of political will by Nigerian authorities to bring alleged perpetrators to justice.

It said: “We are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari to fulfil the promise he made in 2015 to end impunity by immediately releasing the report. Victims and the larger public in Nigeria deserve to see and scrutinize the findings.
“The failure of @MBuhari to release the report of the Presidential Panel that purportedly investigated compliance of armed forces with human rights obligations, three years after the report was submitted to the President is a gross display of contempt for victims.
“Three years ago @MBuhari @ProfOsinbajo established a Panel Presidential on compliance with human rights by security forces. Hundreds of Nigerians in Abuja, Enugu, Kaduna, Maiduguri and P/Harcourt testified. Yet, nothing has come out of the panel’s work. Victims have been waiting.”
