Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has put the President, Muhammadu Buhari, on notice over the worsening insecurity in the country, warning that time was up for the President.

“Nigerians will go to the government and ask the government to resign because they did not elect the chief of staff, the police IG, service chiefs and others.

“Nigerians voted a government into power. We are going with stones to stone them now because they have failed,” Abaribe fired.

The Senator who represents Abia South in the Senate may have spoken against the backdrop of APC’s boast barely one year after assuming office that Nigerians should stone them if they did not perform.

That statement was made by one of the founding members of APC, Prince Tony Momoh, in an interview with The Guardian, published April 3, 2016.

In an exclusive chat with The Guardian, on Sunday, yesterday, Momoh explained that many of the challenges weighing heavily on the administration are the result of the monumental “rot we found when we assumed office.”

“Stone us,” Momoh said confidently if within two years the current government fails to reverse the situation, even as he stressed that this government is laying the foundation for a new and better country.

“Nigerians are complaining of bad roads. But what happened to the several billions of money voted for road construction and rehabilitation under the Jonathan government? If we complain about security challenges, what happened to the billions of dollars voted to fight insurgency, which some people mismanaged, the same with power and other necessary infrastructure?” he asked.

Senator Abaribe’s call for President Buhari to resign expectedly caused a stir on the floor of the red chamber on Wednesday.

Abaribe spoke after the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, presented his motion on rising security challenges in the country.

He said the attitude of the president to insecurity in the country, surprised him, adding that those who live by propaganda will die by propaganda.

Abaribe said he was building up to the fact that Buhari’s government claimed that Boko Haram had been defeated.

According to him, the hard work that was supposed to be done to secure the country was not done because of the propaganda.

He said that the recent Niger and Jos killings by Boko Haram terrorists indicated that the insurgency war was far from over.

He declared that the opposition members in the National Assembly were of the opinion that President Buhari should resign from office.

When the uproar generated by Abaribe subsided, Senator Abdullahi Adamu said Abaribe’s submissions were unnecessary.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, also appealed to his colleagues to approach the issue with caution.

Meanwhile, the senators also protested when the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, in his contribution vehemently opposed the creation of state police on account of paucity of funds crippling the states and possible abuse by the state governors.
